The Last Days of Fall

Still just trying to learn my camera!

I'm having a hard time in mixed light getting the right exposure. I see pictures of people where there are bright backgrounds, but they're not washed out, and the people in the front (in the shade) are exposed correctly. How do they do that? A spot meter? Flash? Photoshop?

Which do you like better: this one?

Or this one?

I like the second one better.

I LOVE that first picture of the trees! LOVE it!

Sadly, I can offer no help with the mixed light problem. I have the same issue, compounded with the fact that my usual subjects are black and furry, making it even harder to get it right. But you should read the book "Understanding Exposure." It's really helped me learn.

If you have a lot of time to set up, put the subject in the shade with a flash, and expose for background. Check out http://strobist.blogspot.com/
There are many great simple lighting ideas to be had...
But I also like the tight shots in the sun with the shade background...
